Bourbon County offers 2 public school systems (larger Bourbon County or the intimate three-school Paris Independent system) along with local St. Mary Pre K-8 Catholic school.  And today, with the Paris Pike offering ultra-convenient, no-traffic light, 4-lane access into downtown Lexington in 20 minutes, attendance at prestigious private academies is now a "convenient carpool reality" for Bourbon County children.

Downtown Paris hosts a community college extension, historic Transylvania University (Jefferson Davis, 2 US Vice-Presidents, and 50 US Senators were students here) is on the Paris Pike/Broadway, and the University of Kentucky's influence is all around Lexington.

Can there be more convenient variety and options, for education, anywhere?

Public School Systems in Bourbon County (Bourbon County Schools and Paris Independent Schools)

"There is always a delightful mix when it comes to scholarships earned by our standouts in both school systems.  I would describe the relationship between our school systems to be like that of siblings in a family — there is a healthy rivalry, which includes a tradition of teachers ‘crashing' pep rallies of rival schools, as well as ribbing when one school outperforms another on its respective level in sports.  But at the end of the day, if one school suffered a tragedy of any kind, I assure you that the other would be the first at their door offering help.  Aren't we lucky to have the choice in Bourbon County of two school systems?"
Lana Fryman — Superintendent, BC Schools

Jared Techau, Erin Sliney, Jordan Quinn, Erin Hay, and Brandon Coons - BCHS "Super Seniors," and
Paris High Valedictorian Michael Withrow with football standout Chase Dumphford

Look no further than these seven graduates from our Bourbon County schools, who represent scholarship earnings of more than $500,000 (est. over 4 years), to see what is possible from schools that make the most of resources that are dedicated to helping all students, whether their future choice is to attend college or pursue other fields, to make the most of their desire to be productive citizens. In each case, all were accepted into their first college choice.  They leave Paris with an appreciation for their upbringing, values on which to build lives and influence others, with many friends, and confident and excited about their futures — you can tell!

Paris Independent Schools consists of an elementary, middle, and intimate 206-student Paris High School, classified as 1A in Kentucky.  Little Paris High packs a punch, as it ranked #15 in 2005 and #23 in 2006 of ALL 240 public high schools in the state of Kentucky in the state CATS academic performance testing.  7 Advanced Placement courses are offered to top high school students here, as well as dual (high school and college) credit courses at the local Maysville Community College extension.  The school's Girls Basketball program is a perennial force, and their Concert Band is touring in Italy this summer.

Lexington Christian Academy

Ollie Gibbs, PhD, Headmaster, Lexington Christian Academy

With an enrollment of over 1,500 students through its 3 schools (Elementary and Jr. and Sr. Highs), LCA promotes a Christian education espousing "faith, service, and vision" welcoming all Christian denominations.  Using the elite Stanford Achievement test, a nationally-structured comprehensive exam considered more rigorous than public school tests (wider subject matter and correct and incorrect answers v. subjective grading), LCA's K-6 scores, and 7-8 scores were above the 80% range in EVERY category (Reading, Language, Math, Science, Social Science).  99% of LCA's 2006 graduating class went on to attend 29 different colleges throughout the US.

Community College in Paris

For almost a decade, Mayor Don Kiser and County Judge Don Foley had been trying to establish an institution of higher learning in Paris, both to enhance the educational options for our residents, but they were also keenly aware that technology and vocational training would make Bourbon County even more attractive to new industry — ultimately, it would increase the opportunity to create jobs and drive more revenue to the community.

In 2006 and agreement was forged with Maysville Community College — funding was set aside in the Paris Municipal building, and the City Firefighters volunteered to assist in converting rooms into classrooms.  In its first semester there were 4 classes offered.  In spring of 2007, 14 classes and 126 students enrolled.  In the 3rd semester of its existence, 17 classes — reaching its 6 year plan:  That's what we call a success!  With classes that are transferable into the University of Kentucky state university system, we have a solid foundation on which to build our community college in Paris!

"I enjoy making a difference in a community I plan to be a part of for the rest of my life. I'm so fortunate to be able to provide opportunities for members of this community to further their education and indirectly facilitate growth and strengthen our place as contributing members of the Bluegrass Region."

Kay Seither, Academic Programs/Community Education Coordinator, was the principal individual involved in helping get our Maysville Community & Technical College — Paris Extension, off the ground in 2006.  It now offers everything from dual-credit college courses for high school students, continuing education and vocational classes, and leisure classes — many via projection by remote.  Growing so fast and with classes that fill up within days, imagine how our burgeoning community college will keep growing!

Transylvania University — Lexington:  The reason we included photos from Transylvania's campus is not just because it is a prestigious liberal arts school of higher education with many famous alumni, but because it is located on Broadway in downtown Lexington — our Paris Pike extends into Lexington and turns into Broadway.  The campus is less than 17 miles from Bourbon County — no turns!

The University of Kentucky is not only just 20 miles from us, but the exit on I-75 to Rupp Arena is the same exit as the Paris Pike — that's right:  Our Paris Pike leads right to Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington!  With Kentucky part of what is arguably the best college sports conference in the country, we cheer for the Wildcats, with their rich tradition, especially basketball tradition, against conference rivals such as nationally known University of Tennessee and the Florida Gators.
